GUILTY PLEASURE

THE BRIEF: create a photographic poster for the Underground Music Showcase inspired by the Dada Movement and following the title of “Guilty Pleasure”

THE INSPIRATION

Dadaism is an avant-garde European art movement that was popularized in the 1920’s.

During ideation for our design, we took specific elements that are popular and identifiable in Dada art to incorporate into our composition. These visual elements included the characteristic pops of bright red, the effect of cut, paste, and collage, and distortion of the human figure through cutting.

We also took inspiration from the emotional nature of Dada work. We wanted to include the whimsical, cheeky, surreal and humorous personality of typical Dadaism and apply that to our given theme of “Guilty Pleasure”.

After exploring all the implications of the phrase “guilty pleasure”, we found ourselves inspired by the obsession of food, specifically sweets and sugar.

THE SHOOT

For the photographic elements of the poster, we used studio lighting with plastic wrap covered in baby oil over the camera lense to create a hazy, dream-like effect. For the posing, styling, and the model, we were inspired by vintage Playboy magazines to fit the title of “Guilty Pleasure” and give the cheeky feeling we were looking for.

We used food that is commonly associated with pleasure, as well as food that matched the iconic Dada color scheme.
