THE BRIEF: create an original typeface and a type specimen that showcases the typeface
THE TYPEFACE
Charleston is a display typeface that is characterized by its tall x-height and high contrast within the characters.
The postcard specimens took inspiration from retro travel and destination postcards, as well as Art Deco motifs.
THE INSPIRATION
“The Charleston” is a style of dance popularized in the 20’s that was high-energy and playful, while still classy.
While sketching and experimenting, I was very drawn to the exaggerated character proportions and x-heights, along with high contrast between the thick and thins of each character.
This typeface was inspired by Art Deco, which was a popular style in the 20’s as well. The typeface combines the classiness and playfulness of the culture and energy of the 1920’s.
