SEWN

BRIEF: create a three spread editorial fashion magazine inspired by a narrative

THE INSPIRATION

Upon being given the brief, I was immediately inspired by children narratives that were important to me as a child. Sewn was inspired by Coraline, the famous novel and film.

I wanted to choose a narrative that could have an interesting contrast between editorial fashion, playfulness, and creepiness.

As the reader progresses through the spreads, the colors get darker and the fashion gets more mature, imitating Coraline’s journey from innocence and curiosity to exposure to deceit and mortality.

THE SHOOT

Through the styling of the model, I wanted to reference the dolls and buttons that are famous motifs in the classic story.

The fashion uses many layers and textures to mimic the complexity of the story’s animation and also references doll clothes and youth.

Yellow and green lighting were used to create the atmosphere, along with vintage tablecloths as backdrops to mimic old wallpaper.

THE TYPE

The large type that is displayed is hand-drawn type to create textured and “spidery” text that lends to the eeriness of the tale. The hand-drawn type and frames for the images were created using pen and then scanned in to create a texture.
